Administrator draww Posted October 8, 2014 Administrator #26 Posted October 8, 2014 hex editors are life savers in most cases, but not in this case as there's nothing left uploading files to secure cloud storages is also a life saver. but when I say secure cloud storage, I don't mean iCloud or any other 3rd party accessible service. yes we still remember the fappening 2
jimbo Posted October 8, 2014 Author #27 Posted October 8, 2014 i personally dont use/haven't yet used cloud storage, so i wouldn't know which one(s) to recommend he try. mind if i push for a couple of recommendations, please, draww?
SuperModerator BamSec1 Posted October 8, 2014 SuperModerator #28 Posted October 8, 2014 Just as an advice: In the future, if you want us to help, best would be to start a topic, upload 1 of the images (or files) and send one of the staff a PM with the link instead of starting to try things. Who knows what happened since the images didn't open. If you are not feeling comfortable with hex-editors, just opening the file with notepad/notepad++ will show you the header of the image. Just renaming the file with its original extension will be enough. An image converter might also work, but will probably degrade the image quality a tiny bit. Image opened with notepad++ I always say to my customers not to touch anything when they have problems with their PC. They try this, they try that, and at the end there is more to do than if they left the PC like it was. 1
jimbo Posted October 8, 2014 Author #29 Posted October 8, 2014 hey BamSec1. tnx for the advice. had i have realised that the files had in effect been wiped, i wouldn't have tried anything. it was just that he told me he could see them when he first transferred them on to the computer, then suddenly he couldn't open them. that led me to think whatever had happened wasn't anything so major. as for the hex editor side, i hadn't even thought about that, so it's a piece of information gained, logged and hopefully, not needed in the future but there if it is. tnx to all again 1
Administrator draww Posted October 12, 2014 Administrator #30 Posted October 12, 2014 i personally dont use/haven't yet used cloud storage, so i wouldn't know which one(s) to recommend he try. mind if i push for a couple of recommendations, please, draww? well I primarily use mega.co.nz which gives 50 GB free storage with strong encryption support. upon creating new account you create a random 2048-bit RSA key for your files and it'll be used to encrypt your files. without knowing the decryption key (generated per file) or without logging in to your account your files are not reachable. files are encrypted on the server so even mega won't see what you have there the site belongs to Kim Dotcom, the legendary(!) megaupload owner 2
jimbo Posted October 12, 2014 Author #31 Posted October 12, 2014 many tnx for that, draww. i'll pass the info on 1
