Andr-Tech uk666 Posted January 29 Author Andr-Tech #126 Posted January 29 Did you know In Spain, if you eat 12 grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve, you will have good luck throughout the year. The tradition of eating grapes at the stroke of midnight is believed to welcome good fortune and prosperity in the new year. It’s known as "Las doce uvas de la suerte," or "The twelve grapes of luck,” and each of the 12 grapes represents a month of the new year. The custom began back in the late 1800s but was popularized in the early 1900s when farmers in the Alicante area produced an overabundant harvest and needed a way to increase grape sales. As the sweet tradition goes, you’re supposed to eat the grapes one at a time at each chime of the clock (which, honestly, sounds a bit challenging). If you can finish all 12 grapes within the minute, you’ll see luck, success, and positive energy in the new year. 1 1

Andr-Tech uk666 Posted January 31 Author Andr-Tech #128 Posted January 31 Did you know..... First footing is a beloved tradition in Scotland and Northern England, it deeply rooted in history and superstition. It revolves around the arrival of the first person – the ‘first foot’ – to enter a house after midnight on New Year’s Eve, marking the start of the New Year. The first footer should traditionally be a dark-haired male, believed to bring good luck for the year ahead. This stems from the Viking days when a fair-haired stranger arriving at one’s door often signified trouble. The dark-haired first footer, ideally tall and dark, is seen as a protector against any ill fate that might be lurking. 1 1

Andr-Tech uk666 Posted February 2 Author Andr-Tech #131 Posted February 2 Did you know..... Red is the main color of the Lunar New Year. In Chinese culture, red is more than just a color; it carries the spiritual meaning of positivity. For example, in A Study on the Metaphor of "Red" in Chinese Culture, found that Chinese people associate red with life, happiness, warmth, and good fortune because of its similarity to the color of the sun. In addition to the belief that red can bring joy and celebration, the vibrant hue is also synonymous with luck and prosperity. In Chinese, the color red is known as hong, and the latter can be found in the phrase "kai men hong," which translates to a good start, and is often used when someone makes a profit at the beginning of a day, month, or year. Red is also strongly associated with well-being, youth, beauty, health, and even revolution and socialism. Given its many positive symbolisms, it should come as no surprise that red ornaments and decorations are often used to adorn various Chinese events, including weddings and other celebrations. 1 1
Andr-Tech uk666 Posted February 3 Author Andr-Tech #132 Posted February 3 Did you know..... The Lunar New Year is a time to exchange gifts and give out red envelopes, known as “Hongbao”. Receiving a hongbao is something most Chinese people, particularly children, eagerly anticipate every Lunar New Year. It was also one of my fondest childhood memories. The origins of hongbao can be traced back to the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) when amulet-like items in the shapes of coins were worn. Super-apps like WeChat and AliPay have transformed this age-old practice from a physical tradition into a digital, virtual experience. WeChat popularised the concept of “digital red envelopes” in 2014, incorporating gamified elements such as randomised monetary amounts and group exchanges. In 2017, WeChat recorded a staggering 14.2 billion hongbao transactions on the eve of Lunar New Year alone. While the initial excitement around the digital hongbao has waned over time, the practice remains popular. On Lunar New Year’s Eve in 2024, WeChat users recorded approximately 5.08 billion digital hongbao transactions. 1 1

Andr-Tech uk666 Posted February 14 Author Andr-Tech #142 Posted February 14 Did you know..... Seemingly simple "smell of rain" is actually a complex interplay between the ground beneath our feet and the clouds above. The fresh, earthy smell that we associate with rain, known as ‘petrichor’, comes from a variety of sources. During dry conditions, certain plants release oils, which then become airborne under the impact of rain. Falling raindrops also stir up the soil, propelling a musky-smelling chemical secreted by bacteria, called geosmin, into the air. Finally, lightning can split molecules in the atmosphere to form ozone (O3), which has a chlorine-like tang. Some scientists speculate that the importance of rain to our survival has led us to evolve to enjoy its smell. 1 1
Andr-Tech uk666 Posted February 15 Author Andr-Tech #143 Posted February 15 Did you know..... If you heat up a magnet, it will lose its magnetism. Excessive heat causes atoms to move more rapidly, disturbing the magnetic domains. As the atoms are sped up, the percentage of magnetic domains spinning in the same direction decreases. This lack of cohesion weakens the magnetic force and eventually demagnetizes it entirely. In contrast, when a magnet is exposed to extreme cold, the atoms slow down so the magnetic domains are aligned and, in turn, strengthened. 1 1
Andr-Tech uk666 Posted February 16 Author Andr-Tech #144 Posted February 16 Did you know..... Cruise ships have morgues that can store up to 10 bodies at once. The average number of deaths on cruise ships each year is around 200, largely due to natural causes, accidents, and murders. However, the actual number may be much higher, as not all cruise lines and countries share their death statistics. The most passenger deaths occurred on Carnival Cruise Lines (29%), Royal Caribbean Cruises (12%), and Norwegian Cruise Line (10%). Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare, but factors such as alcohol use, delayed reporting, and ocean rescue challenges can make them fatal. Although cruise lines prefer to avoid discussing people dying on their ships, there are an estimated 200 annual passenger deaths, which is hardly surprising given that 31.5 million people take a holiday at sea each year and their average age is approaching 50. 200 deaths out of 30 million yearly passengers equate to 1 in 150,000 guests, meaning that there are around 3 to 4 deaths per week. 1 1
Andr-Tech uk666 Posted February 17 Author Andr-Tech #145 Posted February 17 Did you know..... Birds the Closest Living Relative to Dinosaurs. Birds are considered the closest living relatives to dinosaurs based on their genetic relation. Among all the bird species, the Cassowary is believed to have the closest resemblance to dinosaurs, but condors, vultures, hoatzins, turkeys, shoebills, ostriches, and chickens also share a close connection. Birds managed to survive the mass extinction event that led to the demise of dinosaurs, in part because of their smaller size and ability to fly. Fossil discoveries indicate that dinosaurs did have feathers, further highlighting the strong link between birds and their prehistoric ancestors. 1 1

This liquid, referred to as an ‘alarm pheromone’, is released from their bodies as a defensive mechanism. Ladybugs use this odour to ward off predators and deter potential threats. This odour is caused by certain volatile compounds found in the ladybugs’ bodies, which are released when they are disturbed. This odour is not only used for defence, but also for communication between ladybugs. The smell is believed to be used to signal other members of the species, as well as attract mates. 1 1
