Adolf Hitler's nephew fought against him in World War II

Hitler's nephew, who he would come to call "my loathsome nephew", was originally named William Patrick Hitler, but he later changed it to William Patrick Stuart-Houston to distance himself from his uncle's name after WWII.

William Hitler was the British descendant of Adolf Hitler. He was Adolf Hitler’s nephew and the son of Adolf’s half-brother Alois.

William was never a true supporter of Nazism. During World War II, he even fought against his Nazi uncle, Adolf Hitler. William enlisted in the US Navy as a medic in 1944 to fight against his uncle in World War II.

He proved himself during his service and was given the Purple Military Heart for bravery.

Most American car horns honk in the key of F

When you hear a car horn blaring on the streets of America, chances are it’s in the key of F. Yes, that’s right! Most American car horns are tuned to this specific musical note.

Why F, you might wonder? Well, there is an interesting historical reason behind it. In the early 1900s, car manufacturers faced a challenge of standardizing car horns. They needed a tone that was loud enough to be heard by other drivers and pedestrians but also distinct and recognizable.

After careful consideration and experimentation, it was determined that the frequency of 440 Hz, which roughly corresponds to the musical note F, provided the perfect blend of audibility and attention-grabbing sound. This unique frequency was then set as the standard for car horns across the United States.

This standardization process has several benefits. The uniformity in car horn sounds allows drivers and pedestrians to quickly identify the source of the honking, helping to alert them to possible dangers on the road. Additionally, the consistent frequency of car horns aids in reducing confusion and creating a clearer auditory environment.

So, the next time you hear a car horn honking, remember that it’s likely in the key of F.

Your stomach must produce a new layer of mucus every 2 weeks

Your stomach is one of the most fascinating organs in your body. It plays a crucial role in digestion, breaking down the food you eat into nutrients your body can absorb. However, the environment within your stomach is far from gentle. It is filled with hydrochloric acid, a powerful substance essential for digestion but strong enough to dissolve metal.

This begs the question: how does your stomach avoid being digested by its own acid? The answer lies in a protective layer of mucus, which the stomach produces anew every two weeks.
This mucus layer is a marvel of nature, composed of water, proteins, and bicarbonate. Its primary function is to act as a barrier between the stomach lining and the acidic environment.

Without it, the cells that make up the stomach walls would be directly exposed to acid, leading to ulcers and other severe damage. This layer is not static; it is constantly being renewed. Every two weeks, the old layer is sloughed off and replaced with a fresh one, ensuring the stomach remains protected and functions optimally.

Interestingly, this constant renewal of the mucus layer is not just a precaution; it is a necessity. Over time, the acidic environment of the stomach can degrade the mucus, making it less effective. By replacing the layer every two weeks, the stomach ensures that the barrier remains strong and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions. This cycle of regeneration highlights the body’s incredible ability to maintain balance and protect itself.

Bears don’t poop during hibernation

You might wonder, “How do animals keep in their poop when they hibernate?” Before an animal goes into hibernation, they will eat a lot to sustain them until they wake.

So, where does all the food go? Bears keep their food in by eating grass and twigs, creating a plug or stopper in their bowels.

With this stopper, they can sleep continuously without having to poop. However, once they wake up, it all comes out.

A second is called a second for a reason

A "second" in time is called a "second" because it is the second division of an hour. The first division of an hour is the minute, which divides an hour into 60 parts. Seconds are the next division, breaking each minute down into 60 smaller units.

The etymology of "second" as a unit of time goes back to when the Romans adopted the Babylonian base-60-time system, where each hour is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is further divided into 60 seconds.

The word "second" itself comes from the Latin term "Secundus," which means "following" or "second in order." This makes sense when considering that a second follows a minute in the order of time divisions.

The root of having 60 seconds and 60 minutes in an hour comes from ancient Babylonian mathematics, where the base-60 system was commonly used. However, the reason we have only 24 hours in a day is due to Egyptian sundials, which were designed to divide daytime into 12 units.

It's believed that 12 was chosen either because that's how many lunar cycles are in a year or because 12 is the number of finger joints on each hand (excluding the thumb), making it easy to count.

It's unknown exactly why we landed on 60 minutes and seconds. But one possibility is because 60 is the smallest number divisible by the first six counting numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) as well as by 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30, making it highly practical for division and calculation.

Americans eat enough burgers to circle the earth over 32 times

Burgers may have originated in Europe (Hamburg, Germany, perhaps?), or in America by a Danish immigrant. Regardless of where it’s originally from though, today, burgers are a distinctly American obsession.

Americans eat around 50 billion burgers a year. That’s a lot of burgers. Americans eat an estimated 13 billion hamburgers each year, which is enough to go around the Earth more than 32 times.

Of course, burgers come in all shapes and sizes (the largest was 2,014 pounds), so it’s impossible to find the exact distance all the burgers would cover.

Bees have 5 eyes

The 3 small eyes on a bee’s head detect light and help them escape from predators approaching from above.

The 2 visible front eyes help them with navigation, detecting colours and UV markings in flowers, as well as flower shapes.

Bees are a fundamental factor in our ecosystem. Without them, flowering crops would no doubt fail. Aside from that, bees are the only insects that produce food that we can eat, and many health benefits derive from it as well.

The important role that bees play in our environment is attributable to many things, one of them being the fact that they have five eyes. These eyes not only have fascinating features, but they also play many vital roles in the daily activities of bees.

Sleeping burns more calories than watching TV

When it comes to burning calories, we often think about engaging in physical activities such as jogging, cycling, or weightlifting. However, did you know that you burn more calories while sleeping than watching TV? Yes, it might sound surprising, but research and scientific findings support this fact.

According to a study conducted by the University of Colorado, sleeping actually burns a surprising number of calories. The study found that on average, a person burns around 63 calories per hour during sleep.

On the other hand, only around 42 calories per hour are burned while watching TV. While these numbers might not seem significant, they add up over time.

An average person spends around 8 hours sleeping per night, resulting in approximately 504 calories burned.

In contrast, the average time spent watching TV is approximately 5 hours per day, resulting in only 210 calories burned.

Therefore, even though the time spent watching TV might seem longer, you actually burn more calories during your sleep.

House plants make you happier

Yes, there's evidence that houseplants can boost mood and well-being. Studies have shown that being around plants can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve overall mental health. The act of caring for plants can also be therapeutic and provide a sense of connection with nature.

One of the most well-known benefits of having plants in your home or office is their ability to purify the air. Through a process called photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, thus improving the density of oxygen and potential air quality itself.

While there is some conflicting evidence that plants might not be a total solution for removing toxins from the air, it is widely accepted that they certainly help. Cleaner air translates into a healthier environment, leading to increased energy levels and improved mood.

Plants not only improve air quality but also have a positive impact on the overall indoor environment. They release moisture vapor through a process known as transpiration, which can help to increase humidity levels in dry spaces.

This can reduce the occurrence of dry skin, sore throat, and respiratory problems, creating a more comfortable and healthier environment for you to thrive in.

Lego bricks can be combined in nearly a billion ways

The LEGO name is made from the first two letters of the Danish words LEG GODT, meaning “play well.”

The Lego company was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter whose primary business of producing household goods. Initially producing wooden toys, the company later developed a system of interlocking bricks.

The basic Lego brick has remained unchanged since its patent, and this enduring design has been associated with the toy’s widespread popularity. These bricks have become a recognizable part of childhood in many parts of the world.

The LEGO Group, which has remained family-owned by the Christiansen family, was among the first inductees to the U.S. National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998. Additionally, it was recognized as “Toy of the Century” by several organizations in 2000.

LEGO Group patented the LEGO brick with the familiar tubes inside and studs on top on January 28, 1958.

In 2012, 45.7 billion LEGO bricks were produced at a rate of 5.2 million per hour. On average, every person on Earth owns 86 LEGO bricks.

Laid end to end, the number of LEGO bricks sold in 2012 would stretch around the world more than 18 times. To reach the moon you would need to build a column of approximately 40 billion LEGO bricks.

Lego bricks have been utilized in various creative projects, including large-scale replicas of famous monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and Mount Rushmore, as well as modern art installations.

In the 21st century, the Lego brand expanded into various electronic games, including a series of Minifigure-based action-adventure games inspired by popular cultural franchises such as Star Wars, Batman, Marvel Comics, and the Harry Potter series.

The brand also released The Lego Movie (2014) A spin-off, The Lego Batman Movie (2017).

Junk food is as addictive as drugs

A report published in the British Medical Journal found that certain food types were just addictive as alcohol, and only mildly less addictive than tobacco.

The study, which analysed data from 281 different reports across 36 countries, used the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) to establish just how addictive certain meals were in comparison with other legal substances.

Alcohol has been given an additivity level of 14%, for example, while tobacco stands at 18%. The latest findings from scientists Ashley Gearhardt, Nassib Bueno, Alexandra G. DiFeliceantonio, Christina A. Roberto, Susana Jiménez-Murcia, and Fernando Fernandez-Aranda, put food at a level of 14% in adults and 12% in children.

However, although those numbers are for food overall, the likelihood of a person getting addicted to cabbage is pretty low. The food group driving addiction is UPFs (ultra-processed foods).

The scientists found that these foods with high levels of refined carbohydrates or added fats, typically sweet and salty foods, “are most strongly implicated in the behavioural indicators of addiction, such as excessive intake, loss of control over consumption, intense cravings, and continued use despite negative consequences.”

The report goes further to uncover why junk foods in particular are addictive. It explains that like nicotine, refined carbohydrates, or fats release elevated levels of dopamine to the brain.

As a result, “foods that deliver high levels of refined carbohydrates or added fats are a strong candidate for an addictive substance.”

Some people also have no control over whether or not they get attached to UPFs, the study added, pointing out: “Addictive drugs are not necessary for survival; eating is. In some countries UPFs are an important source of calories for many people.”

As such, the scientists urged policymakers to consider accessibility, affordability, and convenience when considering the UPF addiction issue.
