Weirdest And Extraordinary Jobs

  1. Drying paint watcher ~ No, this isn’t a joke. Someone earns a living watching paint dry. A man in the UK currently has the job and he spends his days painting sheets of cardboard to test how long new paint mixes take to dry and watching for changes in colour and texture.
  2. Ethical hacker ~ Many people associate hacking with crime. Hacking, however, can often be a good thing! Ethical hackers are experts in cyber security that can be hired to uncover vulnerabilities in computer systems. To do this, they use the same techniques and tools that criminal hackers do — except they obviously have permission to exploit said vulnerabilities!
  3. Professional queuer ~ A professional line stander will do exactly what the job title states: wait in line for other people. As our routines get busier and more demanding, many working professionals (and particularly working parents) no longer have the time to wait in line at the bank or the post office. This is all the truer during major events like Black Friday or new product launches, such as iPhone releases.
  4. Paper towel sniffer ~ Let’s be honest: the deciding factor for you when purchasing rolls of paper towels probably isn’t their aroma. But there are still people out there who get paid to ensure that manufacturers produce high-quality products without a putrid smell.
  5. Paranormal guide ~ So, it turns out that Ghostbusters isn’t just a Halloween movie hit, after all. It’s a real job that people have. As a ghost hunter, or paranormal guide, you earn your living guiding groups of people around abandoned mansions, castles, hospitals, and prisons, and seeking out paranormal activity.
  6. Human statue ~ Though you might not expect it, performing as a human statue is a job that pays quite well! Indeed, posing as a live mannequin draped in paint or garments can pay handsomely just for standing very, very still.
  7. Professional sleeper ~ A hotel in Finland hired a member of staff as a ‘professional sleeper’ to test the comfort of their beds. The individual sleeps in a different one of the hotel beds each night and writes a review about her satisfaction with each one.
  8. Full-time Netflix viewer ~ Imagine being paid to watch TV all day! Well for one lucky employee this dream has become a reality. Netflix has hired someone to watch all their content before it is available to the public and their role is to review and assign each program its correct tag, which helps us viewers find exactly what we’re after.
  9. Snake milker ~ Snakes obviously aren’t mammals, so that’s not the kind of milking we’re talking about here. Snake milking refers to collecting venom from these fearsome, limbless reptiles, so that antidotes may be developed, saving thousands of lives every year.
  10. Train Pusher ~ If you think the London Underground is bad, you should see the trains in Japan. ‘Oshiyas’ are hired to help cram as many people onto a train as possible by pushing them from the outside until the doors will close.
  11. Professional Mourner ~ It is a tradition in South East Asia that a loud funeral will assist the dead as they travel to the afterlife, so professional mourners are hired to cry and weep loudly throughout the service.
  12. Dog food taster ~ The dog food tester’s job is to taste new dog food products, including bones, tinned meat, and biscuits. They do this to test for flavour and texture in comparison to rival dog food brands and human food. Hmm…tasty?
  13. Odor Judge ~ To test the effectiveness of new products, ‘odour judges’ are hired to smell volunteers’ breath, feet, and armpits. They make sure their judgment is accurate, the members of staff have their sense of smell tested monthly. Let’s hope those products are doing the trick, for the judges’ sake!
  14. Chief listening officer ~ Although this role sounds like it should entail walking around the office asking people things and listening actively, maintaining strong eye contact, and giving the occasional fist bump or elbow bump, that’s not what a listening officer does. A chief listening officer is usually part of a company’s marketing department and their job is to “listen in” on conversations about the company on social media. That way, crucial information can be passed on to the company’s decision makers and enhanced customer support.
  15. Marmite Taster ~ They say you love it or hate it and in the case of St John Skelton, he really takes his appreciation for it to another level. As part of a team of marmite tasters, he is responsible for checking each batch of Marmite is the correct texture, consistency, and flavour. In the 30 years he has been working there, he has eaten around 3,000 jars of the stuff!
  16. Scuba Diving Pizza Delivery Man ~ If the fact that there’s an underwater hotel in Florida isn’t bizarre enough, to add on to that, they have a scuba diving pizza delivery man who supplies them with pizza by carrying them through the sea in a watertight case.
