17 Electrifying Google Truths That You May Not Know

It all started in 1997 when two brainiac Stanford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, unleashed their search engine masterpiece upon the world. It taken them nearly two years to creating an advanced method for uncovering Internet treasures.

It and other search sites have provided us an endless library at our fingertips, giving us answers to most of the questions we have each day. 

What do goats, and a T-Rex have in common? Check out these fun truths about Google to find out:

1. The company’s first message on social media was ‘I’m feeling lucky’ in binary code.

Binary code is a language that uses two symbols, often 0 and 1, to communicate ideas.

2. Google is the most visited page on the internet!
Not only this, but the 5th most searched for thing on Google is...Google!

3. The name Google is based in math
Google gets its name from a googol, which is a 1 with 100 zeroes! This is a googol: 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 It's also called a ten Duotrigintillion - but googol sounds better.

4. Google made it into the dictionary in 2006
As well as being a number, google is also a proper word. It's been added to the Oxford English Dictionary as a verb (that's a doing word) that means to search for something online.

5. Google started in a garage
Before Google became a gigantic company worth a TRILLION dollars, their offices were in a garage! No huge banks of computers or fancy equipment, just two mates and a dog called Yoshka.

6. Google likes a laugh
There are lots of little hidden jokes on Google. Just try googling "do a barrel roll" and you'll see!

7. Old-fashioned Google
Type 'Google in 1998' then press enter or click search. The results page will show you what Google originally looked like when it was first launched. 

8. Can you speak Klingon?
You can set your language in Google to almost any language - including made up ones! They have Klingon, Pig Latin, Pirate, and even Elmer Fudd!

9. There are roughly 8.5 billion Google searches per day
According to Google, people do about 8.5 billion searches on the site around the world every single day. 

10. There is a T-Rex at the Google Offices
That's right, there's a life-size model of a T-Rex skeleton at Google HQ in California. As well as looking cool, it's also a reminder that no matter how big you are - you still might go extinct one day.

11. Google has used goats to mow and fertilize its lawns
Back in 2009, Google shared on its blog that it hired 200 goats accompanied by a border collie at its headquarters in Mountain View, California, to keep their grass looking great.

12. Googly Eyes
Type 'Googly Eyes' and hit enter or click search, and you'll see the Google logo get a pair of eyes which will follow your cursor around the page!

13. Animal Sounds
Forgotten what noise an animal makes or simply want to hone that tricky farmyard impression? Type 'animal sounds' then press enter or click search. There you go, a cow does say moo after all.

14. The corporate headquarters of Google is called the ‘Googleplex’
It’s in Mountain View, California. Employees can use the company’s volleyball courts, visit the doctor and even get their dry cleaning done.

15. One out of every 6 searches is a question that has never been Googled
What you’re Googling could be the first time it’s been searched on the site.

16. Google has been in trouble with the law
Google has been fined a number of times over the years. One of the biggest fines came in 2017 when the European Commission fined Google 2.4 billion euros for breaching something called antitrust rules. The European Commission accused Google of giving its own shopping service higher-prominence searches, even if better deals were available elsewhere.

In February 2000, U.S. singer and actor Jennifer Lopez wore a revealing jungle print dress by the designer Versace to the Grammy Awards.

According to Google, it became the most popular search ever, in just one night.

At the time, Google was just text-based. The demand for a picture of Lopez’s dress inspired Google to make its own section for images.
