Self-hosted Cloud Storage

This sounds like an oxymoron, but you can self-host your cloud storage.

Use Case:

  • Automatically upload photos (and remove them to free up storage on your phone).
  • Access your files 24/7, regardless of location.
  • Secure your files and privacy without exposing them to 3rd parties like Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud.

Here's how:

Installation Steps:

  1. Install NextCloud - This is the Docker app that will host your files.
  2. Install Tailscale - This Docker app provides peer-to-peer VPN using Wireguard.
  3. Install the NextCloud and Tailscale app on your mobile device.
  4. Sign on to Tailscale.
  5. Connect the NextCloud app to your Tailscale device hosting the NextCloud Docker instance.

Optional:

  • Setup NextCloud app on your phone to automatically upload photos.
  • Set up shares in the NextCloud Docker App.

That's it. After completing all of these, you should have access to all your contents in your NextCloud Docker instance.
