Marianne is the third of seven children by Auschwitz survivor Otto Rosenberg, who was part Roma and part Sinti. At the age of 14 she entered a talent contest and won. The price was a recording and her first single 'Mr. Paul McCartney' became her first hit. Marianne soon became a household name in the German schlagermarket with hits like 'Fremder Mann', 'Marleen' and 'Lieder der Nacht'. In 1975 she entered the preselection for the Eurovison with 'Er gehört zu mir'. Although it didn’t enter it was another hit record in the charts. She tried to enter again in 76 for Luxemburg with 'Tout peut arriver au cinéma' ('Lieder der Nacht'), but again she did not enter. She would have two more tries in entering the Eurovision before giving up on the idea. ('Ich werd’ da sein, wenn es Sturm gibt' in 1980 and 'Blue-Jeans-Kinder' in 1982.)

In 1976 she was also one of the first artists to try to incorporate disco into her music. The result 'Ich bin wie Du' was probably the first disco record sung in German or in any other European language (besides English). It was her biggest hit outside Germany and the song was one of the effects on forming the basic idea for H-NRG music (which subsequently was the basis for Italo and Balearic Disco).

In 1982 she was fed up with the Schlager scène and the way the record company treated her. She started to hang out in Berlins squatter scene where she met Marianne Enzensberger. The two found they were likeminded musically and they started working together. A cooperation that would last throughout the eighties and nineties. Other musicians she befriended in this time were Blixa Bargeld (Einsturzende Neubaten), Kai Havaii (Extrabreit) and Rio Reiser, who would become a very close friend. Marianne wanted to make Neue Deutsche Welle music and with Extrabreit she recorded 'Duo Infernal (Rückkehr der phantastischen fünf)'. The album that followed 'Spiegelbilder' was a daring attempt to merge Schlager with NDW. The public didn't understand and it took Marianne years to get back on her feet. During that time she refined her act and music in the gay scene of Germany. It lasted until 1989 when she came back with the song 'I need your love tonight' by Dieter Bohlen (Blue System) for the tv serie 'Rivalen der Rennbahn'. The song marked her comeback, which she sealed with the album 'Uns verbrennt die nacht'.

When the success of the new Marianne grew her old record company Phillips smelled easy money and started flooding the market with cheap compilations of her seventies work. Although Marianne wasn't pleased she couldn't do much about it cause contractually Phillips owned all her rights. To at least show the public how she thinks the old songs were supposed to sound she recorded the studio-live album '5 Tage & 5 Nächte'. The album was followed by 'Luna' and 'Himmlisch', both with songs and lyrics by Marianne Enzensberger, In 1996 her friend Rio Reiser died and she performed his song 'Junimond' at his memorial concert.

In 2004 she did a greatest hits tour around the album 'Für immer wie heute'. Parallel to this tour she performed a Chanson and Liederprogram in small venues. This program would be the basis for her cover album 'I'm A Woman' in 2008. In 2009 she lends her voice to one of the characters in the Disney movie 'Kiss The Frog'. In 2011 she returns to the electro-pop genre she endevaroud on 'Luna' with 'Regenrhythmus'. In 2013 she makes a sudden appearance with the side project Schattenherz together with Dirk Riegner.
