Cyberpunk 2077: Sony pulls game from PlayStation while Xbox offers refunds

From questionable content and accidentally exposed genitals, Cyberpunk 2077 has faced a litany of issues.

inspired by a cult-favourite tabletop role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077 seemed tailor-made for success. It’s the first big console game from Polish studio CD Projekt Red since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a massively successful game that won numerous awards and end-of-year accolades after its 2015 launch.

Cyberpunk 2077 stars Keanu Reeves in a major role that bears his likeness as an on-the-run rocker-turned-military-veteran-turned-cybernetic terrorist. The game’s heaps of trailers and previews and marketing materials seemed to promise a slinky, sexy, neon-tinged world of futuristic action.

Cyberpunk 2077 Was Supposed to Be the Biggest Video Game of the Year, starring Keanu Reeves and hyped to the heavens.

But the December 10 release of Cyberpunk 2077 soon became a disaster of epic proportions. What Happened?

Nearly a decade of hype led to a troubled release riddled with glitches, a livid fan base, refunds for potentially millions of players and a possible class-action lawsuit.

Granted, with more than 8 million pre-orders, Cyberpunk 2077 had already turned a profit for Polish developer CD Projekt, the company behind the juggernaut Witcher video game series.

A lack of oversight: A feature of the game recreates the tests that doctors use to discern whether a patient has epilepsy but offers no epileptic seizure warnings in advance of their appearance.

One games critic reported that she suffered grand mal seizures as a result; the developer has now added warnings.

Not only does the game perform terribly on last-gen consoles such PS4 and Xbox One, but there are also countless bugs—including basic game development fails that make walking, talking, and shooting difficult.

One glitch even exposed character’s detailed p*nises and b*easts, which would poke out of their clothes. The memes and mockery were relentless and swift.

The Cyberpunk 2077 debacle also cost CD Projekt Red’s two cofounders a combined $1 billion in wealth when its stock tumbled by some 40% this past week.

On December 14, CD Projekt Red issued an apology to gamers, vowing to fix the numerous glitches and offering those who purchased the game an “opt to refund.”

Then on December 17, Sony delivered a crushing blow—it removed Cyberpunk 2077 from its PlayStation store and offered refunds to customers who purchased the game.

The next day, Microsoft announced that it would also provide refunds but the game remains for sale in its store.

Cyberpunk 2077 will receive updates that the studio hopes will improve its performance so that console players will find it more workable.

However, there’s no denying that the Cyberpunk 2077 that CD Projekt RED actually released isn’t the game that it spent so long hyping up, one that was promised to have a “much, much deeper role-playing experience” than The Witcher 3 while also serving as a “benchmark” for the industry.

There are also versions in the works designed specifically for the most recently released consoles, the currently hard-to-find PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X systems where the game already looks and plays better.
