Apple fined in Italy for misleading consumers over waterproof iPhones

Apple was fined 10 million euro ($12 million) for misleading claims about how waterproof its iPhones are

The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) announced the fine on Monday, saying Apple misled the public on two counts:

1. The regulator said Apple's claims about how deep and long its iPhones could go in water without sustaining damage were only true under laboratory conditions.

Apple advertised several iPhone models as resistant to water for up to 30 minutes, even a few meters under water, but it didn't make clear that this is only true under specific conditions (completely still and pure water in a laboratory), which wasn't true in real-world scenarios where consumers might drop their phones in water.

2. It also said Apple's warranty terms were misleading, as they were voided if the phone was damaged by liquids. It said Apple failed to repair iPhones that had been water-damaged.
