jimbo Posted August 10, 2015 #1 Posted August 10, 2015 hi all. need a bit of advice before i possibly screw things up. my pc is a home built one with genuine windows 7 ultimate x64 on it. i have read bits and pieces on the win 10 upgrade, but they all seem to be just for shop bought machines, not the home builder. hence my questions: as i entered the product key by hand when i did the first install of win 7 on this machine, i assume it is in there somewhere but not as an entry recorded in the slic table in the bios. is that right? if yes, how will i be able to do the free upgrade to win 10, as i was of the opinion that win 10 looks for the win 7/8/8.1 key in that slic table? it wont find it so will the upgrade be aborted? will it ask me at some stage during the upgrade for the win 7 key, perhaps and continue from there, complete the install and activate win 10 or is there going to be all sorts of problems? TIA, guys
vdkercjm Posted August 10, 2015 #2 Posted August 10, 2015 You don't even need a serial to download Windows 10 (all links have already been given x times on the board - even with the official links from Microsoft). If you do the update through Windows update, your serial will be checked and that's it. If there's a problem during the install you will return to the previous OS (in your case Win7). Or you can do a fresh install with the downloaded ISO (see all instruction on the board explaining everything from downloading, to burning and finally install). 2
geno Posted August 10, 2015 #3 Posted August 10, 2015 You are fine. From everything I've read it doesn't matter if you're computer is home built or a name brand let alone if the existing OS is legit or not. As vdkercjm said links are posted on the board here and other ones I'm sure plus other sources. Heck there is even a link to a tool from M$ to download and create the ISO 2
jimbo Posted August 10, 2015 Author #4 Posted August 10, 2015 you've misread my post i think guys. i wasn't worried about downloading windows 10 at all, in fact i already have that burnt to disk ready for a clean install. my worry is how is win 10 going to see the key i used when i installed win 7 so as to be able to activate win 10 on the upgrade? 2
geno Posted August 11, 2015 #5 Posted August 11, 2015 If you do it right it should not ask for the key if you upgrade. Good chance most questions you have are answered here Hidden Content Give reaction to this post to see the hidden content. 2
jimbo Posted August 12, 2015 Author #6 Posted August 12, 2015 ok guys. tnx for info. gonna give it a try tomorrow. if the upgrade goes ok and activates how it should, i'll go for a fresh install after getting the win 10 key
SuperModerator BamSec1 Posted August 12, 2015 SuperModerator #7 Posted August 12, 2015 Got advice and help? ... Don't forget there's a button. 3
trud Posted August 24, 2015 #8 Posted August 24, 2015 Just be wary of some of your cracked programs under win10 some will not work, I know one of the ones I use does not and haad to revert back to win 8.1 as the license key was not accepted.I have had a thought about it and may try using the license users name as an addittional user on it and reinstall win 10 with that user as well 2
Administrator draww Posted September 1, 2015 Administrator #9 Posted September 1, 2015 I had problems after upgrading to Win10 from 8.1 (license not activated and applications started to crash) so I had to do a clean install. normally I'd get a Home Single Lang. but I said to myself: "why not going for the enterprise" now I've installed Ent and activated using one of the KMS solutions. everything is fine... btw if you're concerned about privacy issues and don't need new features, you can install a LTSB version. you won't have Windows Store or other installed new stuff but you still get Win10 2
