Flash drive copying and then deleting files

Recommended Posts

Req. help... I recently received several 117gb flash drives. Every time I copy some file it copies them. I can see it, then when I come out of the drive and go back in (the folder is there) but the files are GONE!  However, the drive will TAKE the space for the file! Shows NO files (0)

Have scanned for malware as well as viruses and nothing found.  FYI: 1) using win xp sp3 ( can't afford new machine).  2) I only notice this if I copy other files to the drive and then check the folders after files have been copied.

Can anyone suggest a remedy please!  Thanx in advance for help.

You may have counterfeit USB flash drives, which have 'Fake' capacities.

The fake flash drives, will take an excessively long time (1 to 2 hours) only 'pretending' writing to but the data was not actually being written. Hence, when you try to read it back, it will claim data as being corrupt. In addition, many strange files/folders will appear and you cannot delete them.

Search for tools to test and detect fake capacities flash drives.

Please be aware that because of the huge capacity, do not try to format the 128GB flash drive using Windows XP. Windows XP can only format drives up to 32 GB and may damage the 128GB drive.

You have to use "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool".

... Let us know how it works out.

Thank you for suggestions.  did use HP USB disk format tool to format them.  Will check to see if they are fake. ~ there's a couple of programs out there that does just that.

Update:  Used a free program called FakeFlashTest to check these USB Drives. Both came back with only 25gb of used space instead of the 117gb as stated.  They are both generic USB's whereas neither on had a serial number nor a manufacturer's name only General U.

No t what I expected, but at least usable.

Thanks again for suggestion and help.

So true! I know Asian companies selling 2TB USB flash drives for only $7.00.

They indeed exist since more than 2 years, the 2TB flash drives, but not at that price, not even for whole sale traders!
