kirbinster Posted August 29, 2014 #1 Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) My Win7x64 box is periodically semi freezing. When it does this the problem seems to last a minute or so. I can use the Alt-Tab combo to switch between apps but they are non-responsive for the most part. Some I can use the mouse on to close, others the mouse has no impact on. In task manager it will sometimes show one or two tasks at not running, but there is no rhyme or reason as to why. After a minute or so all is well. I have Symantec Endpoint Protection running as well as Malwarebytes and neither one shows any issues. Ideas welcomed. Thanks. Edited August 29, 2014 by kirbinster

kirbinster Posted August 29, 2014 Author #3 Posted August 29, 2014 I found an issue using a program called minitoolbox. The event that is coinciding with the problem is this: Error: (08/29/2014 11:46:03 AM) (Source: Service Control Manager) (User: )Description: The WinPcap Packet Driver (NPF) service failed to start due to the following error: %%2 Only problem is I have no clue what this means
Andr Legend s33m33 Posted August 29, 2014 Andr Legend #4 Posted August 29, 2014 WinPcap is a capture driver which bypasses certain windows restrictions to get the job done.Your security settings or anti-virus must be disallowing it's startup. Try re-installing it again manually - Hidden Content Give reaction to this post to see the hidden content. Though I doubt that is the reason for frequent freezes. The link mentioned in my earlier post should be good for troubleshooting. You could also make a list of running applications during those freezes. Eliminate the rest and focus on common factor.(Firefox is notorious in causing memory problems) Apart from that, RAM can also cause issue. Unplug RAM from the socket and clean it's connectors. Also use a memory test tool to check if it's error-free.Lastly, faulty power supply is also known to cause similar issues. 1
kirbinster Posted September 1, 2014 Author #5 Posted September 1, 2014 Could this be caused by failing USB drives? I have a bunch of them hanging off the system and one just failed and another is running very hot and is about to fail. Busy pulling crap off that second one right now. IF that is the case where would I see that in task manager or some other monitor?
kirbinster Posted September 11, 2014 Author #6 Posted September 11, 2014 Found the culprit, it is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium 2.0.2.1012 When I stop running this the system is fine. So what is wrong with this program
Andr Legend s33m33 Posted September 11, 2014 Andr Legend #7 Posted September 11, 2014 Maybe it doesn't go well when running parallel with Symantec. Other than that, it works fine for most users. Try turning off resident protection permanently on Malwarebytes.
