Recover dead harddrive

Anyone know of a program to boot up a dead hard drive so I can recover my important files before I dump harddrive?

I doubt if there is a program that does that! There are people who do that for a charge. There are many methods on the net including freezing the dead hard drive, but it didn't work for me!

If you have any questions about what you are doing, it is probably best to have a professional look at your hard drive for you.

 

The first thing to do is determine if it really is a hard-drive failure you are confronting, and not one of the countless other equipment glitches that can cause a boot failure.

 

Find the model number and manufacturer of your hard drive. Go to the manufacturer's Web site and look for the company's proprietary diagnostic software.

 

You will have to download and then burn it to a CD-ROM or save to USB flash drive.

 

Boot the dead computer from the diagnostic disk and run it. The diagnostics should give you some indication of what the problem is, although sometimes it will find no problems, even though the drive is still not working.

 

If all has gone well, at this point you should have a rough diagnosis. You might not know exactly what is wrong, but at least you have ruled some things out and narrowed it down.

 

If you have access to another computer, remove the failed hard drive from your sick PC, and hook it up as a secondary drive to the alternate computer.

 

The easiest way to do this is through a USB universal drive adapter or a USB enclosure (a good device to have around for all sorts of hard-drive diagnostics).

 

Allows any 2.5", 3.5", or 5.25" hard drive or optical drive with any standard IDE/ATA/ATAPI 40 pin

or SATA interface to be connected via USB to any USB

 

Plug the SATA end of the SATA to USB Adapter into the failed hard drive and then plug the USB end into an unused USB port on alternate PC or laptop. You have effectively just connected the failed drive to the PC/laptop as an external USB hard drive.

 

Windows then press the Windows+E key combination to open the ‘Computer’ dialog box.

 

Double-click the icon that represents the failed hard drive and navigate to the folder(s) containing your photos or documents.

 

Copy the entire folder(s) onto the PC external/internal hard drive.

 

If the failed hard drive does not show in my computer Try:

 

Right click on my computer.

Choose – MANAGE.

Then find - DISK MANAGEMENT.

You should see the failed hard drive under the list.

Right click on it, and choose - CHANGE DRIVE LETTER.

Choose anything, but I recommend something higher than - M.

 

If the failed hard drive does not show in my computer, try data recovery software:

 

Do-it-yourself data recovery software

 

If the failed hard drive is making unusual noises (e.g. grinding, clicking), has been physically damaged, or shows other signs of mechanical failure, data recovery services are recommended.
