Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older

The claim that only one in two billion people will live to be 116 or older is a factual statement that reflects the extremely rare occurrence of supercentenarians, or people who live to be 110 or older.

While the exact number of supercentenarians is an estimate, studies and organizations like the Gerontology Research Group suggest a global population of only a few hundred individuals at this extreme age.

This number is extremely small compared to the current global population of over eight billion, making the odds of reaching that age incredibly low.

There are around 16 million people alive today that are direct descendants of Genghis Khan

studies in 2003 by geneticists found that a specific Y-chromosome pattern, present in about 16 million men alive at the time, points to a single male ancestor from Central Asia around 2,500 years ago.

While this ancestor is likely Genghis Khan, the statement should emphasize that this is based on Y-chromosome data, indicating a common male-line ancestor, not necessarily direct father-to-son lineage in every case.

It is important to remember that this figure refers to direct male-line descendants, meaning men who inherited the specific Y-chromosome from a father.

This does not account for female-line descendants or other branches of the Genghis Khan family tree, which are much more widespread.

Those metal studs on your jeans have a purpose

The metal studs, or rivets, on jeans are a practical feature designed to reinforce the fabric and prevent tearing, especially at high-stress points like pocket corners. Today, they mainly serve a decorative purpose.

It was the riveting of workwear trousers, invented by Jacob Davis, and patented by Levi Strauss & Co. in 1873, that created the legend, which gave blue jeans their iconic and enduring status. These rivets strengthen the work pants that would become blue jeans, making them last longer for working men.

While modern jeans are less prone to tearing, the rivets remain a signature design element and a nod to the garment's durable history.

Im certain they're responsible for many scratches on cars etc also!

In 2016, Mozart sold more CDs than Beyonce

Who put out the best-selling CD In 2016? Beyonce? Adele? Drake?

How about Mozart? The Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? The man who’s been dead for more than two centuries?

In 2016, Mozart sold more CDs than Beyoncé due to the release of a special 200-CD box set, "Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition," which commemorated the 225th anniversary of his death.

Because the music industry counted each disc within the box set as an individual CD sale, a relatively small number of box sets (around 6,000) resulted in a much larger CD sales figure than that of contemporary artists like Beyoncé.

OK, but that’s still a pretty good showing for a project – released to coincide with the 225th anniversary of his death – that holds about 240 hours of music and sells for almost $500 on Amazon.

Most collect calls are made on Father’s Day

Yes, that is a well-documented trend: most collect calls were historically made on Father's Day in the United States, a fact noted by telephone companies and sociologists alike in the late 20th century.

While Mother's Day receives the highest overall call volume, Father's Day stands out for its significantly higher proportion of calls made on a collect basis, with children often associating fathers with family finances.

The average person with the average stride living until 80 will walk a distance of around 110,000 miles

Walking is one of the most basic, yet profoundly essential activities humans engage in daily. Whether it’s for leisure, exercise, or simply getting from point A to point B, our steps accumulate over time.

But have you ever wondered just how far the average human walks during a lifetime? The answer is not just surprising but also profoundly impactful, especially when you relate it to treadmills and fitness.

The average moderately active person takes around 7,500 step/day. If you maintain that daily average and live until 80 years of age, you’ll have walked about 216,262,500 steps in your lifetime.

The average person with the average stride living until 80 will walk a distance of around 110,000 miles. Which is the equivalent of walking about 5 times around the Earth, right on the equator

The average person spends over 6 months of their life sitting at red lights

American Automobile Association (AAA) says that on average, Americans spend 58.6 minutes a year at a red light. If we were to live until the ripe age of 79.8, nearly 6.5 months of our lives would be spent at a red light!

That's assuming you're driving the same amount at age 70, as you are at age 20.

Chimps drinking a lager a day in ripe fruit

Chimpanzees “drink” the equivalent of several alcoholic shots each day, and it may help explain humans’ proclivity for boozing.

For the first time, scientists have measured the ethanol content of fruits found in chimp habitats in Africa, and it suggests that ape diets are laced with alcohol.

Fruit produces alcohol as it ripens through natural fermentation by airborne yeasts, but it was unknown just how much was available to chimps day-to-day.

The most frequently consumed fruits at each site, a fig in Nigeria and the plum-like fruit of the evergreen Parinari excelsa, in Ivory Coast, were found to have the highest alcohol content.

Dogs preferred to align their bodies with the Earth’s north-south axis when taking a poop

Scientific studies show that dogs prefer to align their bodies along the Earth's north-south axis when defecating, a behaviour known as magnetoreception.

This ability allows them to use Earth's magnetic field as a natural compass, though this preference is abandoned when the magnetic field becomes unstable.

While the exact reasons are still being researched, potential purposes include aiding long-distance navigation and improving their homing abilities.

Unfamiliar dogs might attack you, if you smile at them

While smiling is a friendly gesture for humans, dogs do not share this social cue.

A smiling baring of teeth can be interpreted as a threat of aggression by dogs, particularly unfamiliar and wild ones, so avoiding it is a wise safety precaution.

Instead of smiling, use these methods to project non-threatening behaviours:

  1. Maintain a calm demeanour and avoid direct eye contact.
  2. Kneel or lower yourself to their level to appear less dominant.
  3. Use a soft, reassuring voice, especially with dogs.
  4. Offer the back of your hand for a dog to sniff.
  5. Back away slowly without turning your back completely on the animal.

A cat spends most of its life sleeping

A cat will spend an average of 15 hours a day sleeping.

Cats are naturally crepuscular predators meaning they hunt mostly at dusk and dawn. This means they are most active during the twilight dawn or dusk, sometimes well into the night period when prey such as rodents are also very active.

Cats sleep so much because sleep is restorative for them and allows their body to repair and regulate. Although cats have been domesticated, they still have innate hunting behaviours which is why they will have short bursts of energy, followed by long periods of rest.

Kittens and older cats doze even more, getting up to 20 hours of sleep. So, around two thirds of a cat's life is spent snoozing.

Cats mostly sleep during the day, although they can enjoy a nap at any time.

Dog can fall in love just like humans do

Oxytocin—known variously as the “love hormone” and the “cuddle hormone”—is released by dog brains, too. It enables them to fall in love with both dogs and humans, and you are not one to question their lifestyle choices nor whom they deign to love.

Dogs can form deep emotional bonds that are scientifically comparable to human love, evidenced by increased oxytocin levels during positive interactions with humans and other dogs.

These bonds manifest in behaviours like seeking closeness, displaying affection through body language, and showing attentiveness, but differ from complex human concepts of love rooted in abstract values and consciousness.

The first automobile race in the United States was held in Chicago in 1895

On Thanksgiving Day 1895, six cars lined up near Chicago’s Jackson Park to compete in the first automobile race held in the United States.

Given the frigid conditions—30 degrees Fahrenheit and deep snow—only two were destined to finish the 54-mile round trip to Evanston and back. The average speed of the winner was seven miles per hour.

Despite these quaint statistics, America’s first car race was full of hope, drama, and significance for the development of the nation’s nascent automobile industry.

Because of the rotation of the earth, an object can be thrown farther if it is thrown west

An object thrown westward will travel slightly farther than one thrown eastward with the same initial velocity due to a phenomenon called the Eötvös effect, which is related to the Coriolis effect.

This happens because throwing east adds to the Earth's rotational speed, increasing centrifugal force and effectively slowing the object's descent, while throwing west subtracts from it, increasing the downward pull of gravity.

However, this effect is incredibly small and, in most practical scenarios like throwing a ball, would be overwhelmed by factors such as air resistance.

Nearly 80% of all animals on earth have six legs

Nearly 80% of all animals on Earth have six legs is a widely circulated fact based on the dominance of hexapods (insects and some other small groups), which account for most animal species by number.

Insects, a type of hexapod, alone represent over 80% of all described animal species, making six-legged creatures extremely prevalent across the planet.

In summary, the statement is accurate because the category of "six-legged animals" encompasses most species on Earth, with insects forming the largest and most diverse segment of this group.

There are approximately three chickens for every human being in the world

Chickens outnumber humans by a ratio of at least 3-to-1. In fact, chickens are the most common bird species in the world.  Chicken population: As of 2023, the global chicken population was estimated to be over 26.5

When factory farming took off after World War II, to make the process of raising chickens even more efficient, humans began selectively breeding chickens specifically for either meat or egg production.

But this access to cheap chickens and eggs comes at a steep expense. It costs us the health of our planet, the safety of industry workers, and the terrible suffering of billions of animals.

Broiler chickens, the industry term for birds raised for meatselectively bred to grow very large, very quickly and there are “layer hens,” bred to lay far more eggs than they would naturally.

While China has the largest population of chickens, most of these chickens are egg-laying hens, who have a lifespan of 18-24 months on factory farms.

Most chickens alive in the US are broiler chickens, who have a lifespan of just 42 days on factory farms. Broiler chickens are housed in huge warehouse facilities, tightly crowded together for the entirety of their short lives.

Laying hens don’t have it any better. The majority are confined to battery cages, stuffed into barren wire crates that are only a few feet wide and about 15 inches tall.

These dirty, crowded environments are notorious for breeding and spreading zoonotic disease, such as bird flu, which threaten the well-being of humans and chickens alike.

One quarter of the bones in your body are in your feet

Your feet are a brilliant example of evolutionary engineering. They allow you to walk and run upright while absorbing impact that can be many times your body weight.

By the time you’re 50, you’ve likely put 75,000 miles on them. They are highly specialized in structure and function, in part by how many bones are in a foot: 26 bones – about a quarter of all the bones in the body.

The United States generates an average of 4.9 pounds (2.22 kg) of trash per person every day

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that the average American generated 4.9 pounds of municipal solid waste per person per day in 2018.

This includes materials from homes and businesses and results in nearly 1,800 pounds (816 kg) of waste per person annually.

While companies constantly tell us we need more stuff, upgrading to the latest tech, fashions, gear, and other items often means getting rid of things you already own.

The problem? Most people don't think to donate, recycle, or repurpose their old, unwanted items so they end up in a landfill.

The US is on track to run out of room in landfills by 2036.

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva

saliva main role includes the transport of taste substances to and protection of the taste receptor.

Why you need saliva to taste foods. In order for food to have taste, chemicals from the food must first dissolve in saliva. Once dissolved, the chemicals can be detected by receptors on taste buds.

You cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For instance, if salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to identify it. As soon as saliva is added, the salt dissolves and the taste sensation take place.

Women manage the money and pay the bills in 72% of household

According to a recent survey by national nonprofit American Consumer Credit Counselling:

  • 72 percent of female respondents say they handle the money in their household.
  • Only 26 percent of males say they manage the money in their home.

Although money can be a stressful topic, it is important that couples try to have the conversation early on to make sure they are on the same page with their finances.

When it comes to money there are several decisions couples must make, such as whether to combine their income or not and who oversees paying bills. Couples must decide if they plan to open a joint bank account or would prefer to keep their incomes separate.

A rainbow is typically seen in the morning or late afternoon

Rainbows are typically seen in the morning or late afternoon because the sun must be at a low angle (less than 42 degrees above the horizon) for the phenomenon to occur.

Rainbows are usually seen in the western sky during the morning and in the eastern sky during the early evening.

With the sun low, the light can be directed into the rain droplets in front of the observer, creating the necessary reflection and refraction for a rainbow.

When the sun is high in the sky, the light doesn't reach the raindrops at the correct angle, or the entire bow would be below the horizon
