Expert Explains 'James Bond Stance' To Stop Seagulls Dive-Bombing You!

An expert in animal behaviour has revealed the best way to stop seagulls dive-bombing you for your chips - and it's a simple trick that anyone can do

A scientist has suggested that the best way to deter aggressive seagulls from swooping down and stealing your chips is to subtly position yourself against a wall - akin to James Bond.

Animal behaviour expert Paul Graham suggests that pointing at these feathered pests and maintaining eye contact can intimidate them. However, for tourists wanting to avoid being dive-bombed by seagulls, he recommends standing against a wall for protection, reports the Daily Star.

He stated: "Nobody has their chips stolen twice, it is a tax you pay as a tourist when you arrive at a seaside town. You get caught once and then you find a place to stand with your back against a wall that stops the gull from having a line of attack for your chips. Animals that steal are aware of the attention of the individual they are trying to steal from."

"If a bird is in the air, making calls, and you are worried it might try to attack you then just simply staring at that bird and pointing at it will stop it from coming towards you." He characterised gulls as a 'kleptoparasitism' species, indicating that they prefer to pilfer food from other species rather than doing the 'hard work' of sourcing it themselves.

"One of the things they are renowned for is being kleptoparasitic, which means they steal food from other species so they are using their intelligence to be thieves rather than putting in the hard work catching that food in the first place," Professor Graham explained.

Prof Graham, alongside offering advice on stopping seagulls from swiping chips, shared crucial insights about the future of these birds.
He said, "In terms of foraging on human food then as a group, as a society we just need to reduce the amount of litter."

He added that: "Each bird individually has learn to which items are desirable and if we can reduce their access to that, food in bins and on the ground, then those individuals will never develop the confidence to steal those foods from humans."

That scientist should come with an other solution for me.

I would never go on holiday to go standing against a wall. Oh! Unless I can find a beach with walls! :D
