Did you Know… A dog’s heart beats between 70 and 120 times a minute, compared with a human heart which beats 70 to 80 times a minute. Like people, dogs have a body clock in which their body creates digestive enzymes in a regular way, so they will be able to plot the passage of time through how hungry they are. But no, they don’t know it’s midnight. A dog’s normal body temperature is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Human body temperature can be anywhere from 97 F to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. Dogs curl up in a ball when sleeping to protect their organs, something they have kept from their days in the wild, when they were vulnerable to predator attacks. A female carries her young about 60 days before the puppies are born. when your dog looks at you, their brain releases oxytocin which is the same hormone mother’s brains release when they're first bonding with their babies. The longest-lived dog was an Australian Cattle Dog, named Bluey, who lived to be 29. An adult dog should have 42 teeth in total, that's 20 on top of their jaw and 22 on the bottom. Puppies have only 28 temporary teeth and only acquire full mouth of permanent teeth, between four and seven months old. Greyhounds can run at a speed of approximately 35 miles per hour. Small dogs live the longest. Toy breeds live up to 16 years or more. Larger dogs average is 7 – 12 years. Eighty percent of dog owners buy their dog a present for holidays and birthdays. More than half of them sign letters and cards from themselves and their pets. Most pet owners (94 percent) say their pet makes them smile more than once a day. Dogs are mentioned 14 times in the Bible. Studies suggest that dogs have a remarkable memory. Some of them have such strong associations and occasional memories that they can store events in their memory for years. It has been established that people who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks. Evidence from fossils suggests that five types of dogs had evolved by the Bronze Age, around 4500BC. These were mastiffs, wolf-type dogs, dogs similar to greyhounds, pointing dogs and herding dogs. All dogs can be traced back 40 million years ago to a weasel-like animal called the Miacis which dwelled in trees and dens. Seventy percent of people sign their pet’s name on greeting cards and 58 percent include their pets in family and holiday portraits. A study 2020, discovered that the bond between a dog and its human caregiver was remarkably like the attachment bond between human infants and their mothers. Owning a dog is a BIG responsibility! Just like humans, dogs have feelings and needs, and they have to be taken care of properly. They need regular walking, healthy food, a clean, cosy place to sleep and lots and lots of love and affection!
