Who Wants To Be A Millionaire crowns first winner in 14 years

A history and politics teacher has been crowned as the first winner of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? in 14 years.

In all, five contestants previously won the £1 million prize on the UK version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

The first UK Millionaire winner was Judith Keppel in 2000. She remains the only woman to take the top prize.

The father of four, who lives in Telford, England, correctly answered the final 15th question about the death of a famous pirate in 1718 (scroll down to see the question).

Mr Fear, who has been married to his wife Debs for 33 years, is the sixth champion in the programme's 22-year history.

The streak runs in the family as his elder brother Davyth won £500,000 as a contestant on the same programme last year.

Mr Fear only used one of his lifelines, 50:50, to win the jackpot, leaving his "phone a friend" and "ask the host" options unused.

The show was recorded in July under strict social distancing with only the production team and presenter Jeremy Clarkson in the studio.

Clarkson "thrilled and delighted" with winner

Host Jeremy Clarkson said having his first millionaire winner filmed during lockdown with no audience had been “emotional”.

Clarkson, 60, added: “I’m thrilled and delighted we've found someone who seems to know just about everything. I can't wait for the viewers to see it and I want to watch it back too.

“I was just in awe of this contestant and think they are probably the best the show has ever had in its 22-year history. It was a joy to sit and watch it unfold.”

He added: “It felt like we whizzed through the 15 questions and all of a sudden confetti was falling from the ceiling and I was saying ‘You’ve just won one million pounds’.
