Editing his own topic/post

Recommended Posts

Members can only edit their topics/post during the first 30 minutes after posting. ?

However, Andr-Elites, Andr-Contributors and Staff members can edit them indefinitely.

Hello Andr-Elites, Andr-Contributors and Staff members,...

With all due respect, I want to testify that very very few forums apply such a restrictive rule...

I propose to modify this rule and apply it only to new members during the period when their posts are subject to the approval of a moderator. ?

Thanks in advance for your attention.

Howdy hpwamr!

Thank you for your suggestion.

In the past members were allowed to edit their posts indefinitely.

However, every new post has to be checked by my co-Moderators and myself, and we often noticed that changes were made, and unauthorized content was added, after we checked those topics/posts.
Some added links to other forums and blogspots, and even links to porn sites!

hpwamr, I am not pretending you would do any of the things mentioned above, on the contrary, but it would not be correct towards our other members to add an exception.

FYI, we are with 7 staff members, of which only 5 are active every week.

The staff list shows 17, but 2 of them are old Administrators who still have to be removed from the list, and the other majority are people who have "restricted" Administrator rights, such as people from our forum software company (Invision Community) or are programmers of our add-ons, applications or themes.
They are only allowed to log in when a program that they sell is not working as they pretend.

More than 1 year ago, we posted an announcement that we require a few extra Moderators, but it was only 3 weeks ago that a new Moderator joined.
This, thanks to Bad Karma who, after discussing with the other staff members, sent a PM to bluescope asking her to join the staff because she reported so many dead links that it was clear she would be a great asset to our community.

Hint for the readers of this post: we still require 1 extra Moderator!

Members who have the title of Andr-Contributor are members who posted 1,000 topics and have proved to be real Andrites.
Just 3 or 4 never fulfilled to post 1,000 posts, but were already member in our old forum (http://forum.andr.net) since 1999.

And you are right, hpwamr, very few other forums apply the same rules like ours, but many of the other ones have a [Donation] and/or a [V.I.P. Membership] subscription button, whereas our Webmaster had to buy the forum software, pays everything mentioned above whenever new updates are available, but still offers his forum totally free for all members.

We apply the same rules like they were 20 years ago in the old Andr.net and I guess they will never change ... they were written and in a few cases adapted by our past and present Admins in collaboration with the Webmaster.

Cheers, :hi:

Hello BamSec1,

Thank you for this long detailed message to explain your decision.

However, I note that the measures taken to arrest the few indelicate members penalize all honest and serious members... ?

The absence of editing does not facilitate the correction of a fault or a dead link and it bothers me to ask a moderator to do this work.

Okay, I'm not going to make it a state affair and I accept the rule hoping for a review of it.

Have a nice day :bye:

Hi hpwamr,

The correction of a fault could be done immediately by checking what we typed, or, within the allowed 30 minutes after posting.

When links are dead, members have to click on "Report" (top right of topics/posts) and mention "Dead links".

When it's an old topic, it will be removed, but if it was posted more recently, we only remove the dead links and, if they were the only posted links in the thread, we lock the topic and add a post mentioning why it was locked.

If the poster has new links, we re-open the topic so he/she can add them in a new post and bump it up again to the top of the list.

When they were posted in the first post, the topic would remain somewhere in the middle or at the end of the list and many wouldn't even notice it.

I sincerely do appreciate the good will of some members like you, hpwamr, and promise to start a thread in "Area 51" (the staff's section) to discuss about this problem with my Administrator, co-Mods and the Webmaster.

Cheers, :hi:
