About the Book
Because lasers can offer less-invasive procedures for both diagnosis and treatment, their role in the medical field is on the rise. Lasers can be modulated in wavelength, power, density, and energy, and they have a wide range of applications in ophthalmology, lithotripsy, and oncology as well as in dermatologic and cosmetic procedures.

The book consists of five chapters. The basics of laser, its principle and some technical aspects are explained in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 deals with most of the lasers starting from solid-state lasers, gas lasers, semiconductor lasers and diode-pumped lasers with emphasis on medical lasers. Laser light–tissue interactions are discussed in Chapter 3 so that it will be easier to follow Chapter 4. In this chapter, various effects of the laser beam on the biological tissues are discussed with relevant examples. Five basic types of laser–tissue interactions, namely photo-thermal, photo-disruptive, photo-chemical, photo-mechanical and biostimulation are discussed in good depth as these interactions are important in using lasers on humans or animals. Chapter 4 deals with medical applications and cosmetic applications in two different sections. Most of the medical areas are covered in this chapter with technical aspects. Section 2 of this chapter explains state-of-art in cosmetic photonics. The final Chapter 5 is devoted to possible laser hazards, safety precautions and safety measures. This chapter gives a guideline to laser safety officers, surgeons, medical and paramedical professionals on the use of lasers and safety measures. It is not the aim of the authors to threaten the medical community by briefing the laser hazards but to caution all those who are exposed to or use lasers in their profession.
